Why You Should Sail to DOMINICA Right Now!

Embarking on a sailing adventure in Dominica is a must for any avid traveler or boating enthusiast. This unspoiled Caribbean paradise boasts an incredible array of breathtaking landscapes, from lush rainforests to pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Uncovering Hidden Gems with Omar

Our journey begins with a meeting with our tour guide, Omar. A true insider, Omar introduces us to some of Dominica’s most breathtaking hidden gems, including Syndicate’s famous black sand beach and the incredible Indian River. As we journey up the river in traditional style, sans engines, we are transported back in time and enveloped by the island’s rich history and natural beauty.

Exploring Local Flavors

One of Dominica’s greatest draws is its culinary delights, many of which are derived from the island’s lush vegetation and bountiful waters. We indulge in such treats as chicken cheesy fries at Omar’s Never Thirsty bar/restaurant and discover local delicacies like jelly coconuts, which offer a taste of true Caribbean culture.

Connecting with the Locals

Dominica is not just about natural beauty; it’s also about its welcoming people. We forge connections with locals like Peter, Camila, and Siggy, who share their culture, customs, and personal stories. Through these interactions, we gain a deeper appreciation for the island and its people.

Discovering Paradise Farms

Our journey continues at the stunning Paradise Farms, a private venue used for weddings and parties. The lush landscape is filled with exotic flora, including ginger lilies and vibrant cane plants that are utilized in local medicine. As we explore this hidden paradise, we learn about Dominica’s rich cultural heritage and its ties to the land.

Sailing into Calabish Bay

Finally, after a day filled with adventure, we anchor in the tranquil waters of Calabish Bay, where we connect with our surroundings and bask in the island’s unspoiled beauty. This serene anchorage is the perfect spot to reflect on our journey thus far and to ponder the incredible discoveries yet to come.

Why Sail to Dominica Right Now?

With its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and lush landscapes, Dominica is an adventurer’s paradise waiting to be explored. So what are you waiting for? Join us as we continue our sailing adventures in this untouched Caribbean haven!

Dominica is, well, breathtakingly beautiful. And right now, it's not spoiled, overridden with tourists, or too commercial. But that won't last. As word gets out about the insane landscape and the opportunity for adventure, it won't be long before you'll have to wait in line to swim up Titou Gorge, hike to Boiling Lake, or jump into one of the 365 rivers. We've been in Dominica on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran for just about a week. And in this episode, we floated up the Indian River and saw the house where Captain Jack Sparrow met the VooDoo lady, Calypso in Pirates of the Caribbean Part 2. We learned all about the Caribe Indians and why they settled on that river, and about the native plants and their medicinal properties. Faustin is a fabulous tour guide, very proud of his island and his heritage. If you're looking for a tour on Dominica or for someone to look after you and your boat in Portsmouth, you can reach him via WhatsApp at 767-277-0013. Then Omar took us to Paradise Farms, an exquisite botanical garden, privately owned, that is available for weddings and other parties. They are building cabins and a restaurant, so it will be a retreat. We were lucky enough to travel over the river and through the woods to granny's farm. Granny is a full-on Kalinago Indian, whose ancestors are indigenous people to Dominica. Her farm is lovely and filled with dwarf "jelly" trees. The jellys are actually a type of coconut that produces lots of water and jelly-type fruit. Hence the name. Granny's husband planted only dwarf trees so that Granny would be able to harvest the fruit even after he was gone. Our final stop of the day was Omar's favorite swimming hole. A beautiful spot in one of the 365 rivers on Dominica with rocks big enough to climb and jump into the crystal clear water flowing beneath you. Omar is a fantastic island tour guide. If you're looking for fun and adventure on the island, give him a call on WhatsApp at 767-277-1316.
