Starlink vs Iridium GO. E70
In this episode we evaluate the pros and cons of the Iridium GO communications system and Starlink with the DataHub from Predict Wind onboard our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran.
We’ve been using Iridium GO for all of our offshore passage weather and communications as well as tracking information on our website for the past three years.
This summer we purchased Starlink. We received the hardware in the summer and began using it immediately. It was amazing having wifi on our entire passage from Hampton, VA to the British Virgin Islands. Twelve days at sea and more than 500 miles offshore, we were downloading updated grib weather files every few hours, Jeff was streaming Yellowstone, and I was chatting with our kids and grandchildren, when I wasn’t seasick. But that’s another story.
Then PredictWind came out with DataHub. This smart device gathers GPS tracking, data, and communications from the boat and transmits that data via Starlink.

Sailing Wind Therapy
We’re Jeff and Adrienne. We both grew up sailing, but took 20 years off while married to our exes. When we got together in 2007, we remembered how much we loved sailing. So, we took a week-long sailing class in 2013, bought a Leopard 48 sailing cat, and never looked back (except for when Hurricane Irma destroyed her but we immediately purchased a new Leopard 45). In Spring 2021, our plan is to leave our marina in St. Petersburg, FL, and begin making our way to the Bahamas, then to New England, and then south, arriving in Grenada sometime in June 2022. Maybe, in May 2023, we’ll make our way across the Atlantic Ocean and spend some time in the Mediterranean. And then go around the world. We’ll figure it out.
