Leaving the Caribbean to NYC Aboard our Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran
Sailing Wind Therapy hosts Nick Johnson and Jeff Eason from their sailing YouTube channel joined forces with fellow sailor Sator for a memorable voyage across the Atlantic. With their goal initially set on reaching the Bahamas, they took a detour in Turks and Caicos and bid farewell to Nick and Jeff’s friends. Continuing onwards to the Bahamas where they welcomed Dex and Jod aboard, their mission was to sail as far north as possible.
As the Caribbean chapter of their journey came to an end, the crew set their sights on navigating towards New York City. Their adventure aimed not only to test their sailing skills but also to explore new destinations such as Maine and its iconic lobster cuisine. Leaving Spanish Wells behind, they crossed through Egg Island Cut, making use of a perfectly timed 160-degree wind with 15-18 knots of true force. Armed with parasails, the team took advantage of optimal sailing conditions provided by the experienced companions aboard.
Rounding Cape Hattas
The crew faced some unexpected challenges while rounding Cape Hattas at night when they encountered a rapid wind speed of 29 to 30 knots. Despite these trying moments, the team managed to maintain their focus and continue onwards. Their determination shone through as they navigated successfully through potential stormy weather, crossing paths with various wildlife like birds along the way.
A Safe Arrival in Hampton Virginia
Arriving in Hampton Virginia after a series of storms and navigational hurdles, Dex and Jody disembarked from the vessel. They left a heartfelt thanks to both Dex and Jod for their outstanding contributions during this portion of their journey. The crew continued with just Nick Johnson and Jeff Eason aboard, sailing onward towards New York City.
The final stretch saw them pass through foggy conditions at midnight near Chesapeake Bay, narrowly avoiding collisions with freighters. They made it to the downtown docks in Hampton Virginia, taking shelter from the impending bad weather ahead. With renewed strength and determination, they sailed further north towards their destination.
Arriving in New York City
Sailing Wind Therapy’s journey culminated in a triumphant arrival in New York City, marking over four weeks of travel since departing from St Martin. They proudly proclaimed that it was their determination and hustle that got them through each obstacle encountered along the way.
From battling challenging weather conditions to successfully rounding Cape Hattas at night, the crew’s resilience proved vital in reaching New York City. This remarkable journey aboard their Leopard 45 catamaran exemplified their unwavering commitment to adventure and pushing boundaries.
I love sailing into New York City!!! What made the trip even better was that we had great crew and great weather, for most of it anyway.
We left Spanish Wells, northern Eleuthera, with our friends, Dax and Jody. You might remember them from our Bahamas videos two years ago. We buddy sailed with them for six months there. I never thought I would have flown our Parasailor over night. But the weather was perfect, and it wasn't just the two of us on board. What a great adventure!
The Gulf Stream was definitely our friend on this passage as it pushed us along as fast as 15.3 knots!!! For the most part, it gave us an extra 3-5 knots. Gotta love that. But we definitely didn't love the dense fog that plagued us coming into Norfolk, VA. It was the most stressful two hours we've ever experienced on our boat.
Thanks for watching!
