The Solution To Our Core Problem | Step 395

In this episode, Hannah and Danny from Sailing Uma tackle their core issue on the boat by working on installing an air conditioner. They also provide a solution to dealing with air bubbles in the glass work and share a new experiment they did using resin. Air Conditioner Installation The first step is figuring out how to install an air conditioner. They bought a larger air conditioner that comes with both interior and exterior units, along with coolant hoses between the two. Danny expresses concern over the length of the coolant hoses being only 6 meters long and if it would be enough for installation on their boat. Finding the Right Place for AC Installation In the meantime, Danny decides to install the air conditioner on the bulkhead which will become a chalkboard later. This position keeps the air conditioning unit safe and accessible in that area of their boat. Seeking Expert Help for AC Installation However, it becomes clear that Danny will need help with purging the system and adding refrigerant. As they have limited Italian language skills, they call in an expert AC technician who arrives shortly after. The experts work on installing the air conditioner and hooking up all necessary connections. Fixing Core Delamination with Resin Injection As Danny works on other areas, he realizes they can fix delamination by injecting resin into voids behind fiberglass panels. He drills a few holes and fills the cavities using a syringe with resin from below. The Result of Their Fixes Danny checks areas where he injected resin, comparing good spots to bad ones before fixing them. He is quite satisfied with the outcome, stating it worked better than expected. This process helps them understand how much they should pre-wet balsa core and prevent similar issues on other parts of the boat. The Air Conditioner in Action Finally, their newly installed air conditioner helps keep the temperature low inside the boat while they continue working on the glasswork. This new condition enables them to work more efficiently and carefully, making a significant difference in their work quality. New Mask for Dust and Chemical Protection Hannah shares her reason for getting a new mask to protect herself from dust and chemicals while grinding fiberglass. This new mask is all-in-one, including a Tyvec hood on top of the full mask that covers all exposed skin, minimizing potential acne problems caused by irritants. Glassing In The Cabin Top Side Deck Finally, they glass in the cabin top side deck after their air conditioner installation. They discuss how the cabin top has become significantly stiffer due to infilling all depressions and filling the core. Danny explains that although it still flexes, with time and added ribs (if needed) the cabin top will be plenty stiff and strong. Ending Thoughts In conclusion, this episode showcases the solutions Sailing Uma found to improve their sailing experience during hot temperatures. The team installed an air conditioner, fixed core delamination by injecting resin, and discovered ways to make their work more efficient and safer with new protective gear.
