We sailed Sea Moon all the way from Australia to Venice expecting to discover a beautiful city filled with canals.
But once we started exploring, we realised we'd been thinking about Venice completely backwards.
Venice isn't simply a city with canals.
Venice is a city because of them.
In this episode, we leave Sea Moon behind and discover a very different side of Venice — where the waterways aren't just beautiful, they're part of everyday life.
We explore the Grand Canal and watch a city function without conventional roads. Ambulances travel by water, the local bus floats, and even a trip to dinner can mean being collected by boat.
Stepping ashore, we discover some of Venice's more colourful history at Ponte delle Tette — quite literally, the “Bridge of Breasts” — before finding Libreria Acqua Alta, the wonderfully chaotic “High Water Bookstore”, where even the books have had to learn to live with Venice's rising water.
Then it's back onto the canals.
We catch Venice's everyday public transport, experience a centuries-old tradition aboard a gondola, and finally splash out on a €220 private water taxi, collected directly from Sea Moon for an unforgettable trip around the lagoon, through the Grand Canal and on to dinner — with prosecco in hand. 🥂
After experiencing Venice from both the streets and the waterways, one thing became very clear to us:
The water isn't simply part of Venice's scenery.
It is the heartbeat of the city.
Come explore the City of Water with us. ❤️
