Sailing northward through western Greece demands disciplined coastal pilotage, patience, and meticulous timing. For Australian cruising sailors Scott and Sandy aboard their Seawind 1160 Lite catamaran, Sea Moon, voyaging through the Mediterranean has become a masterclass in navigating historic passages at an unhurried pace. Documented on Sailing Sea Moon, their journey captures the reality of life afloat—balancing technical seamanship with the freedom of exploring remote anchorages.
Following a tranquil week anchored in Mytikas Bay beneath the steep limestone mountains of the Greek mainland, the crew prepared for a major navigational passage into the North Ionian: transiting the historic Lefkas Canal. Severing the mountainous island of Lefkada from the mainland coast of Acarnania, this ancient dredged waterway eliminates the arduous offshore circumnavigation of Cape Doukato. However, navigating the cut requires strict pilotage along a shallow dredged channel flanked by shifting sandbanks, arranging town quay dockage, and timing the hourly opening of a floating road bridge that has spanned the narrows for forty years.
This northbound passage brought together the technical and personal dimensions of long-distance cruising. Between negotiating Mediterranean mooring lines, celebrating Captain Scott’s fifty-ninth birthday milestone ashore, and assembling in the yacht convoy awaiting the swing of the Santa Maura Floating Bridge, the voyage showcases why cruising Lefkada remains a defining highlight of any Ionian sailing itinerary.
For the crew of Sailing Sea Moon aboard their sailing yacht Sea Moon, the passage north toward the Lefkas Canal and Lefkada in Greece began with an easy shakedown through the sheltered Ionian Sea. Departing Mytikas Bay, where the imposing bulk of Mount Varnakas deflects strong thermal winds, the catamaran sailed a relaxed fourteen-nautical-mile course to the calm anchorage of Palairos. Rather than rushing toward transit hubs, Scott and Sandy chose to preserve the steady pace that defines their Mediterranean voyaging.
Dropping their bower anchor into the firm sand of Palairos Bay, the crew launched their stand-up paddleboards from the catamaran’s twin aft transoms, gliding across flat, translucent waters. Ashore, a scenic hike led up steep trails to the ancient fortress ruins high above the coastline, offering panoramic vistas across the Inland Sea toward Kalamos and Meganisi. That evening, Scott and Sandy gathered aboard a neighboring yacht for dinner with fellow cruising sailors, sharing route information and weather forecasts before continuing north.
Arriving at the southern entrance of Lefkada Town aboard sailing yacht Sea Moon, the Sailing Sea Moon crew entered one of the most vibrant maritime crossroads in the Ionian Sea, Greece, flanking the Lefkas Canal. The landscape surrounding northern Lefkada is unique, characterized by sprawling shallow lagoons and historic salt evaporation pans that produced salt for export across the Mediterranean during Venetian rule. Today, these shallow wetlands provide a protected habitat for migratory waterbirds, including visiting flocks of pink flamingos.
Lefkada operates as the primary charter sailing capital of the region, anchored by an expansive marina housing approximately six hundred berths, engineering workshops, and ship chandleries. With the public concrete town quay completely packed upon their arrival, Scott and Sandy bypassed costly marina fees by taking advantage of a midweek charter changeover window. Securing a vacant berth on a commercial charter pontoon, they arranged three nights of dockage for just forty euros, providing a secure, convenient base close to the town center.
While tied safely to the charter pontoon at Lefkada along the Lefkas Canal in Greece, the voyage of Sailing Sea Moon paused for a major personal celebration aboard sailing yacht Sea Moon in the Ionian Sea. Living full-time aboard an offshore cruising boat often means celebrating personal milestones far away from home, family, and lifelong friends. Under these conditions, the shared partnership between two sailors takes center stage, creating meaningful moments amid the practical routines of boat life.
To celebrate Scott reaching his fifty-ninth birthday, Sandy treated him to a surprise traditional Thai massage in the heart of Lefkada Town, soothing tired muscles after months of demanding deck work and maintenance. The festivities continued with cold Greek beers and a leisurely waterfront lunch, followed by an afternoon siesta back on the boat and an evening strolling pedestrian alleys to dine on local Greek specialties at a traditional harborside taverna.
Preparing to depart the Lefkada dock to transit the Lefkas Canal in Greece, Sailing Sea Moon executed a disciplined unmooring maneuver aboard sailing yacht Sea Moon in the calm waters of the Ionian Sea. Mediterranean moorings utilizing slime lines—seabed ground tackle permanently fastened to underwater sinkers—require precise choreography between helm and crew to ensure lines are dropped cleanly without fouling catamaran propellers or rudders.
Scott and Sandy reviewed their departure plan before casting off. With Sandy attending the port stern line and Scott releasing the starboard line, dropping the stern ties first allowed forward tension on the slime lines to draw the catamaran gently away from the pontoon. Sandy then walked forward along the side decks to release the weighted bow lines, letting them sink clear into the harbor basin. After bringing in fenders and hailing cruising friends, Scott motored Sea Moon into the channel fairway to join the morning lineup for the ten o’clock bridge opening, slotting fifth in a convoy of over fifteen waiting yachts.
The operational highlight of navigating the Lefkas Canal in Greece requires the Sailing Sea Moon crew to pilot sailing yacht Sea Moon through the historic Santa Maura floating swing bridge connecting Lefkada to the mainland across the Ionian Sea. Commissioned in October 1986, this landmark floating roadway celebrates its fortieth anniversary in October 2026. Designed as a floating barge pontoon that swings open horizontally, the bridge provides continuous road access while preserving Lefkada’s legal and maritime status as an island.
As ten o’clock approached, an alert siren sounded, automated boom barriers lowered to stop mainland vehicular traffic, and hydraulic motors began rotating the floating span southward into the channel. Northbound skippers held station outside the pontoon’s swing radius, maintaining low steerage way in the narrow cut. As soon as adequate clearance opened, Scott engaged the twin Yamaha outboards, guiding Sea Moon smoothly through the gap ahead of the southbound traffic, avoiding propeller wash and maintaining strict fairway alignment.
Clearing the northern dredged narrows of the Lefkas Canal into the open Ionian Sea of Greece, Sailing Sea Moon guided sailing yacht Sea Moon past the commanding stone walls of the Castle of Agia Mavra in Lefkada. Built around 1300 by John I Orsini, the Frankish Despot of Epirus, this seven-hundred-year-old citadel witnessed centuries of strategic conflict under Venetian, Ottoman, and British rule, guarding the narrow maritime gateway and protecting the valuable salt pans.
Behind the catamaran, the floating bridge rotated back into position, road barriers lifted, and vehicular traffic resumed across the waterway. For Scott and Sandy, clearing the canal opened the broad northern waters leading toward Preveza and the Ambracian Gulf. This transit marked the start of their final cruising week before hauling Sea Moon onto the hard for scheduled winter maintenance, concluding another memorable chapter of their worldwide voyage.

The Santa Maura Floating Bridge is a floating roadway pontoon commissioned in October 1986 connecting Lefkada to mainland Greece across the Lefkas Canal in the Ionian Sea. It opens hourly by sounding a siren, halting traffic, and swinging the pontoon south to allow waiting yachts from Sailing Sea Moon and other cruisers to pass.
The Lefkas floating bridge operates on an hourly schedule throughout daylight hours, opening on the hour for ten to fifteen minutes. In autumn and winter, openings begin later in the morning, making the ten o’clock morning opening a convenient transit window for cruising sailors.
The Lefkas Canal maintains a dredged controlling depth between 4.5 and 5.0 meters along the centerline. Skippers must stay strictly within the marked fairway, as depths drop abruptly to under one meter over surrounding mudflats and salt lagoons.
Cruising yachts can often arrange temporary midweek berths on commercial charter company pontoons. Between Tuesday and Thursday when charter boats are away on charter, pontoon berths are frequently available for nominal fees, such as forty euros for three nights.
Slime lines are permanent mooring lines secured to seabed sinkers. Instead of using an anchor, the crew walks the heavy ground line from the dock to the bow cleat while securing stern lines ashore. When departing, dropping stern lines first allows bow tension to ease the vessel forward safely.
The Castle of Agia Mavra is a fourteenth-century fortress built around 1300 by John I Orsini at the northern entrance of the Lefkas Canal. For over seven centuries, it guarded the strategic narrows, protecting vital Venetian salt evaporation pans and trade routes against invaders.
Sailing Sea Moon departed Mytikas Bay, sailed fourteen nautical miles north to Palairos Bay, and continued to Lefkada Town. Following Scott’s 59th birthday celebration and the bridge transit, they sailed north toward Preveza to haul Sea Moon out for winter maintenance.
