Annapolis, Maryland is one of the Chesapeake’s best-known cruising destinations—but what’s it actually like to visit by boat?
In this episode, we’re putting together a cruiser’s guide to Annapolis, covering the practical details you’ll need when you arrive by sailboat or catamaran. After spending time cruising in and around the city, we’re sharing what we learned about anchoring, mooring, dinghy access, fuel, fresh water, provisioning, laundry, propane, transportation, and getting around town.
We also sat down with the Annapolis Harbormaster to get answers directly from the people who manage the harbor. We talk about anchoring rules, when visiting boats need to register, and why registration is particularly important in an emergency—or if your boat drags anchor. We also discuss some of the challenges cruisers face when trying to find an anchorage or mooring in Annapolis.
Getting ashore is another big part of cruising, so we put several options to the test. We used our dinghy, water taxi, kayak, e-bike, our own two feet, and the city bus to see how easy it is to get around without a car.
Along the way, we tackled the everyday errands that are part of life aboard:
⛽ Finding fuel
💧 Getting fresh water
⚓ Anchoring and mooring
🚤 Getting ashore by dinghy and water taxi
🚲 Provisioning by e-bike
🥾 Walking into town
🛒 Grocery shopping
⚓ Visiting two marine chandleries
🧺 Finding a laundromat
🔥 Refilling propane
🚌 Using Annapolis public transportation
We also explore one of the things that makes Annapolis such an appealing cruising destination: you can accomplish a surprising amount without moving your boat or renting a car.
For cruisers planning a Chesapeake Bay trip, Annapolis is a destination worth understanding before you arrive. The harbor can be busy, anchoring space is limited, and knowing where to go for basic services can make your stay considerably easier.
Whether you’re planning your first trip to Annapolis, cruising the Chesapeake, living aboard full-time, or simply considering Annapolis as a future destination, we hope this guide helps you arrive prepared.
And if you’re already an Annapolis cruiser, we’d love to hear from you: What’s your favorite cruiser resource, anchorage, service, or provisioning tip that we missed?
⛵ We’re learning the cruising life one harbor at a time.

WE'RE GERI AND SHAWN. A couple travelers out chasing the horizon, meeting the people, and capturing it to share with you.
We’ve chosen to Roam the world by boat because, let’s face it, the most interesting path is rarely a straight line.
As we learn to let go of our American drive to finish, and embrace the meandering routes across islands, oceans, continents, and people, we hope to gain a better sense of our world and our place in it.
The path won’t always be comfortable or easy to find but, it will always ROAM
