PREPARING TO CROSS OCEANS! | Replacing our Standing Rigging... Ep 356

The end of the boatyard is insight as our NEW RIG arrives and we re-step the mast! https://www.sailingnandji.com

The long one month in the boatyard is finally coming close to the end. We first hauled out Nandji 2 to complete 3 major jobs in preparation for the year of sailing ahead. With a gnarly Indian Ocean in front of us, we need to make sure the vessel is up for the task.

Hauling out, and wasting no time, we removed the mast the following day in order to replace the standing rig. With the mast on the ground, we got an accurate pin to pin measurement of the wires, a rig plan then created and then sent through to Hamma in Australia where our wires were fabricated by Josh and the team at Arcus Wire.

Whilst we waited for DHL to get our new rig to us in Thailand, it gave us time to sort the other 2 major jobs. Below the waterline was was being attended by the team at Yacht Blast, firstly dustless blasting the bottom and revealing the true integrity of the hull. A million tiny holes were then subsequently filled n faired and the butt re anti fouled to keep those barnacles away.

With the other major jobs underway, it gave Bonita and I time to concentrate on the 3rd task, our teak deck. We scrapped, sanded and vacuumed, sanded and vacuumed some more for weeks on end, finally reaching a finished stunning new deck that not only improves the appearance of our home into super yacht status, but is a functional, water tight deck.

With the new rig arriving into Phuket, the final task of replacing the mast is in full swing and the end of the boatyard is in sight!!

Rebuilding Nandji’s Sailboat – Rig Replacement Adventure

After a long month in the boatyard, the anticipation for the final stages of our preparations has reached its peak. Our focus now is on ensuring that N2 can withstand and conquer the powerful waves and strong winds expected during our Indian Ocean voyage. As part of these final preparations, we embarked on the vital process of replacing the standing rigging.

The project involved fabricating new wires by Josh and the team at Arcus Wire in Australia. While waiting for our new rig to arrive in Thailand, this gave us time to tend to other necessary maintenance tasks like dustless blasting the bottom and redoing the deck.

New Rig, New Strength

Our sailboat’s original rig was equipped with older 1×19 strand and diapform wires. To better prepare for the journey ahead, we decided to replace all of these with the stronger, lighter Hammer Pro wire.

Hammer Pro is renowned in the market for being 30% stronger than other compact strands. The new rig upgrade not only makes our boat lighter and with less stretch but also significantly boosts its overall strength.

The Replacing Process

The replacement process included removing the old rig, carefully measuring and cutting the new wires to fit perfectly. The turnbuckles were added to tighten any slackness, making our rig tighter and more secure than ever before.

Special attention was paid to every detail during this transformation. Our rig had two types of wire on it previously; by replacing them all with Hammer Pro, we ensured consistency throughout.

Strengthening Each Component

While working on the project, additional elements such as turnbuckles and swages were upgraded to provide a solid backup. It became evident that many hidden areas within rigging needed attention.

Cleaning, polishing, and adding new components resulted in an elegant and robust look for N2. As our journey draws closer, we are confident that our vessel is ready for whatever the Indian Ocean throws at us.

Hammer Pro Wire – The Backbone of Our Voyage

The key element in upgrading our sailboat’s rig was choosing the Hammer Pro wire. This global standard in compact strands ensures top quality and consistency. With Hammer Products, like the Hammer X and Hammer Pro, each product comes with a unique ID and test certificate for authenticity.

Lisa Blair’s world-record-breaking solo circumnavigation is just one testament to the strength and reliability of these products.

Mission Accomplished

As we wrap up this intense month of projects, our sailboat N2 has been fully revitalized with a new standing rig. This final touch completes the vessel and readies us for the year-long adventure in the Indian Ocean ahead.
