All Brakes Lock Up! – Boondocking Off-Grid – Electrical System Tour | RV LIVING EP174
This week on Life On Jupiter, we find out what happens when all trailer brakes lock up, and finally, our off-grid electrical system is complete. After a quarter of the mile, keep right towards Los Cruces. As we’re approaching, we comment on the awe-inspiring views around us. Road Trip Highlights We pass by an impressive mountain range and make a quick stop to let Hound out for a walk in the mesmerizing landscape. At night, we encounter another road washout. Choosing the safest route, we continue our journey while discussing the importance of selecting suitable boondocking spots with backup plans. Electrical System Upgrade Tour The long-awaited moment has finally arrived – our off-grid electrical system is complete! It’s about time we shared the fascinating upgrades we’ve made to Momo. Starting with the solar panels, we have 1,800W on board, including Cala Panels which have proven more efficient than our older ones. These are connected to separate MPPT controllers and split into three strings. Solar Panel Junction Box The solar panels run from a junction box, which is not a junction box but simply a waterproof housing to protect the hole in the roof where wires go down. These cables run under the floor and into a forward cabinet. Three strings of solar cables are connected individually to their own MPPT controller, with each positive cable going through a circuit breaker. Positive Cables Connection The positive cables then connect to the main bus bar through another circuit breaker. These breakers have been chosen because they’re specifically rated for DC use and not AC like many others on YouTube. Lithium Battery Connection The lithium batteries, with a capacity of 400Ah each, are connected to receive power from the solar panels through these MPPT controllers. We now have 800Ah total. Battery Switch Comparison We discuss our past experience with expensive boat battery switches, which kept melting. The contact inside the switch was too small in comparison to the thickness of the battery cables. Voltage Reduction and Amperage Increase The voltage has been reduced inside to 13.8-14 volts, increasing the amperage to feed the batteries. Positive cables connect through circuit breakers before going to a 400A fuse connected to the battery. AC Distribution Board Overview The final part of our electrical upgrade can be found at the back of our AC distribution board, where we also reveal how the RV is powered by both solar and shore power. Conclusion Now that our electrical system upgrade is complete, it’s time to put it through its paces. While boondocking near the mountains, we plan to use our new system to run air conditioning and test everything in real off-grid conditions. White Sands National Park Visit After our successful boondocking experience, we head to White Sands National Park. Although there’s no entry fee at the booth due to it being closed, we spend time exploring and making footprints in the stunning white sands. Final Thoughts & Upcoming Plans With two more nights of boondocking near the mountains, we plan to buy some firewood and enjoy a starlit campfire. Before heading to Phoenix for work, we will stop at Casa Grande city park. Boondocking Challenges & Solutions We encountered some road challenges on our journey – a washed-out road section and a window with a missing screen that had been previously broken but locked closed. This experience emphasized the importance of having suitable boondocking spots and backup plans.
