⛵️ UNEXPECTED GUESTS arrive after dark… | Hallberg Rassy 352 | Sailing Joco

We love sailing. And our sail to the island of Guadeloupe (or is it Guadeloopy?) is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. The anchorage was beautiful. The scenery breathtaking. Which is why we definitely DID NOT EXPECT these guests to arrive after dark ….

Sailors Face Unexpected Guests on Their Sailboat in Guadeloupe

As Kristen and Jeff continue to explore the stunning island of Guadeloupe aboard their vintage Hallberg Rassy 352 sailboat, they encounter a surprise that makes for quite the uncomfortable sailing adventure.

A swarm of ants descends upon their boat like something out of an eerie sci-fi movie. The infestation begins with countless ants crawling all over their solar panels – making their sailing life seem less idyllic than they initially anticipated.

Discovering the Cause Behind the Swarm

At first, the couple isn’t exactly sure where these uninvited guests came from. Jeff’s discovery while cooking dinner points to an obvious culprit – it had to be related to turning off their stern light at night. These nocturnal insects, attracted by artificial lights, have found the perfect breeding ground underneath the solar panels. The lack of wind during their stay could very well explain why this unexpected guest chose them for its new home.

Solving the Ant Infestation

The couple decides to confront this ant invasion head on! Using a combination of deterrence and natural remedies, they work diligently to get rid of these creepy crawlers. They quickly realize that this problem isn’t unique – boat neighbors experienced similar issues during their own Caribbean sailing trips.

In the meantime, Kristen and Jeff make sure to regularly inspect other parts of their boat for further signs of infestations. After all, it’s not just about making their immediate surroundings comfortable; it also involves safeguarding their beloved vessel against any long-term damages that might come with unwanted insect tenants.

Exploring Guadeloupe Beyond the Unexpected Guests

Despite these little challenges, life goes on. And what better way to unwind and enjoy after overcoming a scare than exploring the beautiful island of Guadeloupe?

The couple ventures out for a historical hike up to the local Fort that’s part museum and offers spectacular views of their surroundings – proving once again that the joys of sailing are never limited to the open seas.

Savoring Local Island Cuisine

A date night in Guadeloupe couldn’t be missed, especially after enduring quite an eventful week. The island’s warm charm and delectable cuisine provide the perfect antidote to their sailing adventure woes, filling hearts full of joy and stomachs with delicious local delights.

The Unpredictability of Sailing Life

Life at sea can never be truly predictable. Be it beautiful sunsets or creepy crawlies creeping aboard in unexpected ways, the sailors’ journey is peppered with moments that only enhance the thrill and excitement of exploring the open ocean.

Final Thoughts

After conquering the ant invasion, indulging in island explorations and relishing local gastronomy, Kristen and Jeff are well on their way to turning this unexpected adventure into yet another incredible sailing tale. With every voyage, they continue to learn valuable lessons – one of them being the resilience required to adapt to life at sea’s constant curveballs.

Stay tuned as we sail along with this dynamic couple for more tales from their Caribbean escapades, promising many more unforgettable episodes of boat life.
