Outboard Rail Mount Bracket Review: Edson vs Simple System Marine’s Better Bracket

When we replaced our old trusty Yamaha 6hp outboard with a new Mercury 15hp 4-stroke we also needed to replace the old rail bracket to hold the outboard during passages and when not in use. We selected the popular Edson bracket as they are rated to handle a 15HP outboard but are they really? Edson states that their bracket is “Built to hold motors up to 100 lbs./45 kg (about 15hp).” We found that the “about” really meant that our brand new outboard was “about” to break off the bracket and fall into the Caribbean.
So, with failure imminent we set out find a better bracket and in the process learned that today’s new outboards have outgrown the old faithful Edson bracket. New cleaner and more fuel efficient technology have added pounds to the average 15hp outboard, now tipping the scales at over 101lbs on average. Even selecting the lightest 15hp would test the Edson to nearly 100% of its rated capacity and when crossing oceans, you never want to stress equipment to that degree.
Enter the Simple System Marine Heavy Duty Better Bracket. This bracket does the trick for over $130 less than the Edson and is simply a better design. Installation is easier, day to day use is easier and it’s built to hold today’s heavier outboards.
We’ll walk you through the installation and features as well as highlight how and why our Edson failed. True, our Mercury outboard tips the scales at 103lbs but we had assumed with their “about 15hp” claim that they had built in a safety margin to their design. Clearly that’s not the case. At the time of publication we see that Defender has updated their posting to read “Mount designed to hold motors up to 85lbs / 9.9 HP”
