SDA135 Sharks & Cuts ~ Bahamas Dangers

Sailing Dark Angel Says Goodbye to Thomas Cay

In this thrilling episode, we bid farewell to the picturesque Thomas Cay, also known as Pipe Creek, after spending some time at this beautiful location. As we prepare to set sail, I ensure that the water catchment systems are properly closed by turning them over to flush into pipes instead of directly going into our tanks.

We also take the time to securely stow away all loose items and double-check everything, as moving around on a rocking boat can lead to unexpected mishaps. It’s a well-rehearsed routine for us, ensuring that we’re always prepared for our sailing adventures.

Once we’ve got everything squared away, it’s time to head out through the cut. While this maneuver may seem nerve-wracking due to its inherent danger and our slow progress against the incoming tide, I remind myself that every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow as sailors.

Navigating Through Dangerous Cuts in the Exumas

As we set sail towards Big Majors, with a short yet exhilarating 45-minute journey under our wind-filled sails, we successfully navigate the treacherous Joe Cut. This shallow and narrow passageway with depths ranging from 20 feet to 400 feet is one of the most nerve-wracking parts of sailing through the Exuma Cays.

As I mentioned earlier in the episode, every cut comes with its own unique set of challenges. Each time we’ve passed through these narrow waterways, there’s always been that feeling of vulnerability and an increased understanding of just how much is at stake if something were to go wrong.

A Safe Arrival at Big Majors

After what felt like a thrilling adventure, we finally enter Staniel Cay through the treacherous Big Rock Cut. With our sails down and waves pushing us forward, we make it to our destination in one piece. Our new anchorage at Big Majors boasts beautiful views and popular attractions such as Pig Beach.

We’ve had quite an experience so far today – from sailing through dangerous cuts filled with exciting challenges to encountering friendly nurse sharks near the boat! As much as we enjoy sharing these stories, there are always lessons learned along the way. The next time you find yourself facing a daunting challenge or situation in life, remember that pushing through can lead to growth and personal development.

In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel we say good-bye to stunning Thomas Cay and sail to Big Majors Cay, where the boat in front of us is cleaning fish. That makes swimming and checking the anchor a whole different ball game! We're not just dodging tour boats, now we're dodging sharks!
