SDA131 Anchor Ups & Downs

Welcome aboard the Sailing Dark Angel for another exhilarating journey through the Florida Keys waters!

Anchor Ups and Downs at Thomas Key

This episode takes us to one of our absolute favorite anchorages – Thomas Key, nestled within Pipe Creek. As we enter this stunning area, it’s clear why it’s so loved by both locals and visitors alike. The water is crystal clear, revealing vibrant marine life beneath the surface. And the seagrass meadows offer some delightful snorkeling experiences.

A Challenging Anchorage

While Pipe Creek offers an amazing anchoring experience, it doesn’t come without its challenges. As we navigate the shallow waters upon arrival, you can see just how challenging and exciting this spot is. The key to a successful anchor here lies in managing your anchor chain meticulously.

Meticulous Anchor Management

As the tide shifts and the water level drops, we carefully monitor our anchor and ensure it’s securely fastened to the seabed. This is crucial in such a shallow environment where swinging room can be limited due to nearby reefs. Even though it seems precarious at times, with precision and patience, we always manage to find ourselves a comfortable spot.

The Perks of Hidden Gems

What sets Thomas Key apart is not just the shallow waters and the excitement they bring but also the sense of discovery. While most boaters stick to well-known anchorages, we often find ourselves venturing off the beaten path, exploring hidden gems like Rachel’s Bubble Bath or uncharted coves nearby.

These hidden treasures are perfect for a quiet afternoon of snorkeling or simply enjoying the tranquility that comes with being one with nature. The crystal-clear waters invite you to explore the diverse marine life thriving beneath the surface.

Adventures Await

If you enjoy the thrill of adventure mixed with breathtaking natural beauty, then Thomas Key and Pipe Creek should definitely be on your list. Remember, safety first, so always ensure your vessel is properly prepared for the shallow waters. Happy sailing, and may your anchor hold steady wherever your adventures take you!

In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, we explore Compass Cay all around Rachel's Bubble Bath. From there, we cruise to one of our cherished havens, Thomas Cay. Holding in these shallow and narrow waters demands precise anchor and chain handling, yet the rewards of this picturesque sanctuary are immeasurable.

In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel I try to magically erase our bean bag chairs. Then, as beautiful Shroud Cay fills up, we sail away to gorgeous Compass Cay for a bottom scrubbing. It's an easy, relaxing sail. But hold onto your hats as our leisurely sail takes an unexpected twist, we're suddenly doing 123 knots sideways and backwards! It's a wild ride you won't want to miss!
