Episode 24 Sailing Catamaran Escape – Tanna, Vanuatu

Driving from Port Resolution on the east coast of Tanna to Lenekel on the west we pass the lava fields of Mt. Yasur Volcano.

The volcano has a great influence on the whole island, particularly the Cargo Cults of The Prince Phillip and John Frum Movements. We discover a bit more as we visit both of them.

The tribe from Yakel had featured in a television series in the UK where 5 of them had travelled there to live with various classes of people, culminating in a visit to Windsor Castle and an audience with Prince Phillip.
Karl Pilkington had also paid them a visit in his series “An Idiot Abroad”
The film “Tanna” a similar tale to Romeo & Juliet had been made featuring them and was nominated at The Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

Our first visit was to The Blue Cave, where you have to swim a short distance underwater to enter the huge cavern filled with rays of natural light from a hole in its roof.
