Sailing Greece: 50 Knot Storm & Waterspouts on a Family Catamaran
In this episode, we leave Elafonisos and sail around Cape Malea, one of the most exposed and famous capes in Greece.
The wind builds to around 25 knots as we round the cape, but once we are clear, the weather settles back into a beautiful sunny sail with light wind. We continue to Monemvasia, anchor below the great rock, and go ashore to explore the old fortified town.
From there, we head north again. The day starts perfectly — downwind sailing in around 17 knots — but the weather changes quickly.
We find an anchorage, but the wind builds to 35 knots and we start dragging anchor. We decide to move to another bay, and while we are underway the wind increases again, gusting over 40 knots. Then waterspouts begin forming around us, and we see gusts close to 50 knots while trying to find somewhere safe to stop.
This is one of the more intense sailing days we’ve had onboard Bluefish — a reminder of how quickly conditions can change, even when the day starts beautifully.
