Inspect the mooring ball and its pennant/chain before you commit.
Consider mooring ball rating (what size/weight boat it’s designed for) and when it was last serviced.
Ask permission / verify you are authorized to use the ball (especially private ones).
Monitor weather, especially potential swells, and avoid bays that become lee shores in bad swell.
Use an anchor alarm, GPS tracking, check lines regularly — treat the ball like you would an anchor.
If in doubt, anchor instead of picking up a questionable ball.
Why this is not about blame — but about learning: The goal is to raise awareness and help you avoid becoming the next boat cast adrift.
