Ocean sailing has changed and in this year’s ARC Sailboat Rally we find out Starlink has had a lot to do with it. Same with smart phones, Whatsapp, and short video platforms like Tiktok, Facebook, and Youtube shorts.

This year’s ARC rally allowed us to follow along in real time on social media. We saw a man overboard incident where, despite valiant efforts, the victim could not be found—plus the sinking of a Leopard 45 catamaran. ARC competitors also experienced broken booms, more than 30 blown-out sails, broken goose necks, and strong 40-knot squalls for the 140-boat fleet. This year’s ARC rally was one for the history books.
