Bob Perry’s Salty Tayana 37-Footer: Boat Review: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sailboat-reviews/bob-perrys-salty-tayana-37-footer-boat-review/
Could you really live on a small sailboat, go cruising cheap, or chase the sailing dream without buying a huge expensive boat? In this episode, we look at the Halcyon 23, a tiny British pocket cruiser that asks a very old question: how much boat do you actually need? This free sailboat project gives us a real-world way to talk about cheap sailboats, small liveaboard boats, pocket cruisers, minimalist cruising, and the difference between a bargain boat and a boat that quietly eats your wallet.
The Halcyon 23 is small, simple, and built from a different era of sailboat design, with real ballast, a fin keel, tiller steering, and in our case, an old single-cylinder diesel. It is not a floating condo, but for sailors looking at affordable cruising boats, tiny liveaboard sailboats, budget boat ownership, or the “go small, go now” lifestyle, it might be exactly the kind of boat worth studying. We’ll use this boat as a Practical Sailor experiment to learn how to evaluate a free boat, what old sailboats really cost, and whether cheap cruising is still possible.
