DIY Shower Tray: Should We Have Bought It Instead? Ep.336

This week, we are going to custom-make a shower cabin tray to prove a point. Sometimes, when building things, we put way more money, time, and effort into projects than we supposedly should, but that doesn't necessarily mean we made the wrong decision. Well, let's see if, 20 days later, I still believe in this theory.

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

Should We Have Built Our Own Shower Tray?

This week we embarked on an exciting project to build our own shower tray for our van. As we reflected on the 20-day journey of creating this custom shower tray, we thought it would be interesting to share both the pros and cons of this endeavor.

The Pros

– Custom Size: The most significant advantage of building your own shower tray is the ability to create a custom size that perfectly suits your needs and space.- Leak Prevention: By designing and constructing our own shower tray, we can ensure a better guarantee that it will not leak water beneath the floor.- Custom Slope: We desired a large slope in our tray to guarantee efficient drainage towards the drain, which is crucial for proper functionality.- Knowledge Acquisition: Through this project, we have acquired valuable DIY skills that can be applied to other future projects and potentially save money on purchasing pre-made items.- Sense of Pride and Achievement: Taking on a DIY project like building our own shower tray allows us to take pride in our work and feel a sense of accomplishment, enriching our lives with skills and satisfaction.

The Cons

– Time and Effort Investment: While the pros outweigh the cons for us, we recognize that this project took up significant time and effort compared to simply purchasing a ready-made shower tray.- Financial Cost: As expected, the total cost of materials was higher than buying an off-the-shelf option. In conclusion, while we thoroughly enjoyed the process of building our custom shower tray and have gained valuable skills along the way, it’s essential to carefully weigh both the pros and cons. For us, taking on this project was a wonderful learning experience, but it may not be right for everyone.Join us next week as we tackle our next challenge in converting our van into the perfect home on wheels.
