This week we build a new bulkhead for our van. It took a lot of trials and fixings until we finally made it. We are supper happy with the result we got.

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.

Van Conversion: Building a Bulkhead for the Shower Cabin – Ep.329

In this exciting episode, Meta and Duca continue their van conversion journey by focusing on building a vital bulkhead that will ultimately create space for their upcoming shower cabin installation. The duo faces challenges in deciding the optimal method for constructing the bulkhead to ensure it takes up less space and fits perfectly with the van’s interior design. This decision is crucial, considering they want the bulkhead not only to look nicer but also to serve its functional purpose. The Original Bulkhead Dilemma Initially, Meta and Duca contemplated reusing an existing bulkhead. However, upon further assessment, they realized that the current structure took up too much space and had unnecessary intricate shapes. Instead, they opted for a straighter, more compact design that aligns with their van’s interior needs. Creating a New Template for the Bulkhead To achieve the new design, Meta devised a plan to create a template by using a unique method involving various layers of plywood and marking key points around the piece. This method proved effective as it allowed them to carefully measure and shape the bulkhead accordingly. Applying Sikaflex for Enhanced Support In addition to using bolts, Meta decided to apply Sikaflex along the back of the wall for extra support. This decision was influenced by their concern over potential noise from the wood and metal rubbing together during car movement. Moreover, applying Sikaflex ensures a more flexible bond that prevents cracking or making any loud noises. Futuristic Laminated Finish for Poplar Plywood To enhance the look and quality of their poplar plywood, Meta and Duca planned to apply a laminated finish. The choice of poplar plywood was mainly due to its lightweight nature, which helps keep the total weight under 3.5 tons for van homologation purposes. Despite being soft, they sought an attractive solution by opting for lamination. Strategic Support Behind the Wall The creation of support behind the wall provided rigidity to the bulkhead. Furthermore, this strategic move accommodated a trim that extended from the ceiling to the wall, giving it an aesthetically pleasing triangular shape. Planned Finishes for Different Van Sections The duo also discussed their plans for different finishes in various sections of the van. They aimed to use a high-quality canvas or leather-like material for certain areas, while opting for a plastic laminated finish in other parts to achieve an overall beautiful appearance. Final Thoughts and Next Steps In this exciting episode of Odd Life Crafting, Meta and Duca demonstrated their creativity, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail while building a functional bulkhead for their van. They successfully managed to tackle the challenges that arose during the construction process. The team is excited about what’s next in store, as they prepare to install the floor of the shower cabin and move forward with other aspects of their incredible van conversion project. Stay tuned for more thrilling updates!
