We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

Building an Off-Grid Camper Van

While the team at Meta Boatyard is focused on constructing their boat’s hull, Odd Life Crafting members will be transforming a cargo van into a mobile home. This process allows them to continue living on-the-go as they finalize their boat construction.

Choosing the Van

The team selected a Renault Master cargo van, known for its sturdy design and ample interior space. This choice will accommodate their various needs during this journey. h3>Installing the Roof Rack Roof racks provide essential support for additional equipment and ensure the van’s structure remains stable. Odd Life Crafting had to decide on its placement and how many solar panels it could hold while considering factors like ventilation and aerodynamics. h3>Solar Panel Placement Selecting the right place for solar panels was a challenge. Odd Life Crafting considered different panel configurations and their potential impact on ventilation efficiency, ultimately choosing four panels to balance their energy needs while minimizing wind resistance. h3>The Ventilation Advantage Adding solar panels directly onto the roof can hinder their performance due to lack of proper ventilation. This setup ensures each panel maintains optimal temperature, thereby maximizing efficiency. h3>The Ventilation Advantage Installing the panels on a ventilated aluminum plate instead of sticking them directly onto the roof further enhances performance. This system allows air to flow under each panel, preventing overheating and maintaining efficiency. h3>Making Room for Adjustments Odd Life Crafting designed their van to allow future changes easily. This flexibility ensures that if solar panels need replacement, it can be done without causing damage or altering the vehicle’s appearance. h3>The Importance of Sealing Applying sealant is crucial when installing roof racks and solar panels. Odd Life Crafting used a durable butyl sealant for added stability and peace of mind, knowing that their investment would not be compromised by water leakage. h3>Conclusion Transforming a cargo van into an off-grid home offers incredible flexibility and convenience during extended periods away from home. By considering factors such as solar panel efficiency, roof rack design, and ventilation needs, Odd Life Crafting demonstrates that even the most challenging tasks can lead to inspiring achievements.
