We go on a road trip around Kos to avoid the meltemi! (Sailing Dakini - Leave to Roam Ep. 87)
We anchor off Kardamaina Beach about mid way along Kos' south coast. We figure this would be a great place to shelter from the meltemi for a few days, and we were kind of right. First Kel, Helen and Pete do a road trip around Kos itself to avoid the worst of the strong winds. They visit ruins, windmills and beaches from their little car.
Unfortunately despite the shelter it's a rocky rolly anchorage, so much so that we put Helen and Pete in a hotel for a few nights, and we even end up moving Dakini back to Kefalos in 32kt winds in the hopes it's not as bumpy. We have a great night a much more pleasant spot before getting Helen and Pete back and weighing for Nisyros, where we go alongside and start our exploration of the 'volcano island'.

Al, from New Zealand and Kel from Australia met through work in 2010 and have been together ever since. Always infected by the travel bug they finally decided to head off on an adventure and started with Vietnam and Laos before heading to Sri Lanka, India, then Cambodia and Indonesia. Their mission is to explore as many off the beaten track places as possible through a slow travel philosophy on a tight budget.
UPDATE!!! After a few years of saving (thanks Covid) they finally did it. They now own DAKINI, a gorgeous Lagoon 421, and are (re) learning to sail while exploring the Mediterranean.

We are Kel and Al, a couple from New Zealand and Australia who have always had a passion for travel. In January 2018 we left our full time jobs and started to travel the world. We spent two years travelling on a budget through South East Asia documenting our adventures as we went before we found a new dream, to buy a boat! Fours years of hard work scrimping and saving led us to our dream. We introduce you to our home Dakini. She is a 2010 Lagoon 421 and we love her. Purchased in Greece we started our adventure cruising the greek islands. Two years later we have sailed all over Greece, Italy, Turkey and Malta with a winter in Tunisia. Our plan for 2026 is to explore Albania, Italy, Malta, France and Spain before the biggest adventure of our lives, crossing the Atlantic around New Years. Exciting times ahead.
