Exploring Nisyros - a massive smoking volcano in Greece! (Sailing Dakini - Leave to Roam Ep. 88)
It's an early start for us in this episode as we leave Dakini in the gorgeous little harbour on Nisyros to explore the island by car. Nisyros is actually a huge active Volcano and the main highlight we visit first, beating all the tourist buses, is the crater itself. After this spooky, sulfurous moonscape we drive to the village high on the crater's edge and then back into the main town for lunch and an explore.
This island was one of our highlights of Helen and Pete's visit, only to be topped by the next evening we spend on the little island just north of Nisyros. It is unpopulated but a gorgeous anchorage with crystal clear water and a charming beach hut. The next day we motor into a strong northerly back to Kefalos to drop Helen and Pete our VIPs at the airport for their return to Australia. What a sad way to finish a great period with them onboard.

Al, from New Zealand and Kel from Australia met through work in 2010 and have been together ever since. Always infected by the travel bug they finally decided to head off on an adventure and started with Vietnam and Laos before heading to Sri Lanka, India, then Cambodia and Indonesia. Their mission is to explore as many off the beaten track places as possible through a slow travel philosophy on a tight budget.
UPDATE!!! After a few years of saving (thanks Covid) they finally did it. They now own DAKINI, a gorgeous Lagoon 421, and are (re) learning to sail while exploring the Mediterranean.

We are Kel and Al, a couple from New Zealand and Australia who have always had a passion for travel. In January 2018 we left our full time jobs and started to travel the world. We spent two years travelling on a budget through South East Asia documenting our adventures as we went before we found a new dream, to buy a boat! Fours years of hard work scrimping and saving led us to our dream. We introduce you to our home Dakini. She is a 2010 Lagoon 421 and we love her. Purchased in Greece we started our adventure cruising the greek islands. Two years later we have sailed all over Greece, Italy, Turkey and Malta with a winter in Tunisia. Our plan for 2026 is to explore Albania, Italy, Malta, France and Spain before the biggest adventure of our lives, crossing the Atlantic around New Years. Exciting times ahead.
