Why You Shouldn't Skip Dominica on Your Caribbean Sailing Journey – EP-138

Welcome back to Escapade! In this exciting episode, we set sail from Martinique to the enchanting island of Dominica, known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean. As cruisers sometimes skip Dominica due to its lack of marinas and only one safe anchorage, we decided to explore its natural wonders and discover why it shouldn’t be missed on any Caribbean itinerary. Join us on our adventure as we hire a car for a road trip from one end of the island to the other!

Unveiling Dominica’s Natural Wonders

Our first stop on this nature-filled journey was Tio Gorge, a stunning canyon carved by a river over centuries. This narrow gorge features dramatic scenery and offers an adventurous swimming experience with steep rock walls covered in moss and ferns. It’s an unforgettable experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Swimming through Teu Gorge

After visiting Tio Gorge, we continued our road trip to enjoy the mesmerizing Tralala Falls, a pair of spectacular waterfalls. The taller Father Falls stands at approximately 125 ft (38 meters) high, while Mother Falls is around 75 ft (23 meters) tall. Surprisingly, both falls originate from different sources and flow side by side.

Hot Springs and Warm Mineral Pools

The area surrounding Tralala Falls is geothermally active, boasting hot springs and warm mineral pools. This unique geological feature adds to the island’s captivating allure, offering visitors a chance to relax in naturally heated water amidst breathtaking surroundings.

Indian River Adventure

Our expedition also led us to explore the iconic Indian River, where scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest were filmed. Along with this exciting film connection, we enjoyed a fascinating boat tour through the river, learning about the local flora and fauna, and discovering hidden gems like mangroves and diverse wildlife.

Beach Barbecue and Local Cuisine

Of course, no Caribbean adventure is complete without indulging in delicious local food and refreshing drinks. We savored an unforgettable beach barbecue with mouth-watering dishes and the famous “dynamite” rum punch.

A Road Trip Like No Other

Renting a car allowed us to explore Dominica’s diverse attractions, from waterfalls and hot springs to local eateries. Despite facing some challenges along the way (such as delayed car hire), our trip was an incredible experience filled with laughter, relaxation, and unforgettable moments.

The Final Verdict on Dominica

After thoroughly exploring the island, it’s clear that Dominica has much to offer. Its unique combination of natural beauty, adventurous activities, and laid-back Caribbean atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for any sailor or cruiser traveling through the Caribbean. So pack your bags, hire a car, and get ready for an adventure you’ll cherish forever!

Next Stop: Guadeloupe

As we bid farewell to Dominica, we’re excited to set sail towards the islands of Guadeloupe in our next episode. Stay tuned as we explore the Îles des Saintes archipelago and celebrate a well-deserved break after crossing the Atlantic! Don’t forget to subscribe to Leading the Escapade for more thrilling adventures.
