Sailboats are HARD to paint! - Ep 277 - Lady K Sailing

Preparing to Paint a Sailboat | Lady K Sailing Ep 277

In this latest episode of our Lady K Sailing series, Captain Laurie shares the details and nuances of painting her beloved sailboat. Painting a sailboat might seem like an effortless endeavor; however, as Laurie discovers during this journey, it is significantly more challenging than one could imagine. Laurie, along with her friend Kim, spent hours meticulously sanding just 6 feet of the boatu2019s transom, which highlighted that painting a vessel this size would require substantial time and effort. Not stopping there, Laurie further refines her project by repairing damaged areas using fiberglass to ensure an even canvas before applying paint.

The Sanding Process

Laurie uses various orbital sanders, beginning with 60 grit, moving through 80 and eventually 120 grit for precision. Although this approach proved effective in smoothing the surface of the boat, Laurie learns that efficiency and effectiveness can be further optimized. She is advised by her cousin Brian, who owns a similar Beneteau First, to consider renting an industrial-grade sander from the marina where Lady K is currently stationed. This recommendation stems from the massive time-saving potential afforded by this larger and more powerful tool. The sanding process becomes notably streamlined, contributing significantly to Laurie’s confidence in the impending painting stage.

Choosing the Right Paints

Upon acquiring the industrial sander and beginning her project, Laurie delves into choosing paints. She emphasizes the importance of quality and ease of application. In consultation with fellow boat enthusiasts and experts alike, she decides on Peti-Ez Epoxy and Primer. These products, as Laurie points out, have a favorable reputation for their easy application process and strong results. She plans to apply at least two coats of primer followed by two coats of paint, with sanding steps in between to ensure an optimal finish. The key themes explored include patience, perseverance, and attention to detail throughout this extensive journey to rejuvenate Lady K’s appearance.

A Final Thought

Laurie encapsulates her experience with an emphasis on preparation as the most critical aspect of painting a sailboat. Although initially overwhelmed by the intricacies involved, Laurie ultimately thrives under the guidance and wisdom imparted by her friends and family. As she approaches each step, she considers both practicality and aesthetic goals to ensure the ultimate transformation for Lady K. Tune in for further episodes as we share more about Captain Laurie’s sailboat journey, encapsulating insights into living aboard a boat while painting and sailing her dream vessel.
