For decades, Catalina Yachts was the front door to sailing in North America.
If you learned to sail, cruised your first coastline, or ever thought “maybe this could be my life,” there’s a good chance a Catalina was involved.
But right now, Catalina isn’t building boats.
Production has paused. The factory has gone quiet. Headlines, court filings, and confusion have replaced what once felt like a permanent part of the sailing world.
So… is this really the end of Catalina?
In this video, we look at where Catalina stands today, what’s actually happening behind the scenes, and why the possible loss of this brand matters far more than most people realize. Then we step back and honor what Catalina did better than almost anyone else: making sailing accessible.
From the Catalina 22 that taught generations how to sail, to the Catalina 30 that became everyone’s second boat, to the Catalina 36 that turned sailors into cruisers, and onward to legendary boats like the Catalina 42, 42 MkII, and the promising 425 and 426 — this is a tribute to the boats that changed lives.
Whether Catalina comes back or not, one thing is certain: no brand opened the door to sailing wider.

I'm Tim and I set out from my days of PHRF sailboat racing on the Great Lakes to explore the world on my 1980 Hughes 35 foot sailboat - Lady K. I refit her extensively, traversed the Erie Canal, and made my way down to the beautiful blue waters. I made a video every Friday with some adventure clips and some "how to" segments to help you get your own boat and come join me. Since the big trip I am back on land refitting Lady K for another big adventure but in the meantime I am making the "Everything You Need to Know" videos and boat shopping videos to help more people enjoy the wonderful world of sailing.
