Not confident gybing your catamaran in strong wind? The long tack takes you through the wind instead, turning from one broad reach onto the other without a downwind gybe.
Onboard the Hobie 16, we look at the sequence: bring the traveller in, sheet in while keeping control of the steering, then tack. Once the jib backs, release the mainsheet, complete the turn and ease the sails back out for your new downwind course.
A useful alternative to practise before you need it in challenging conditions.
