Day one of the Tornado World Championships saw an exhilarating start at Club Nautico Riny in Italy. With two races sailed, the winds were light to moderate with speeds ranging between six and eight knots.
Race One Highlights
At the start of race one, there was a good wind flow allowing the fleet to get away cleanly from the pin end. The upwind leg showcased some intense racing as the whole fleet converged on the Windward mark. This convergence led to multiple clashes, capsizes and a lot of shouting. Several boats were found stuck in the midst of this chaotic event.
As the downwind gate was approached, there were more clusters and clashes among the tornadoes leading to a massive bunch up on the race course once again. Eventually, the fleet spread out and raced through for the remainder of the race. From Bad Boy 94’s perspective, although their finish wasn’t good with a 20th position in the fleet of 30, they managed to sail well under the circumstances. This chaos took about ten positions off their time and cost them.
Race Two Performance
The second race began with a clean start and better wind, setting the stage for a much-improved performance by Bad Boy 94. The fleet enjoyed strong winds that boosted their upwind performance while they managed to sail faster and maintain good speeds.
Keeping clear of potential clashes at the Windward mark, they made it through to the downwind leg. Twin trapezing added to the thrill of sailing in race two and by maintaining an unorthodox sailing approach the fleet managed to finish successfully without any mishaps.
Overall Positions
The impressive performance in the second race resulted in Bad Boy 94 finishing a more comfortable 10th place. Currently, they stand 14th overall after two races with some pro tests left for this evening.
Throughout these thrilling events at Club Nautico Riny, a healthy mix of new and old faces in the Tornado fleet brought in exciting racing moments. It is noteworthy that several rookie sailors were also part of the fleet which made it more exciting.
