Prevent Mast Breakage with This Simple Sailing Tip
Hello yes it’s Joe here for Joy Rider TV this is important for anybody who sails a boat which has diamond wires if your boat has diamond wires on it and one of the diamond wires fails when you’re sailing in a reasonably strong wind like trapezing conditions then the Mast could break so it’s very important to check your diamond wires regularly, like every year at least. Now at last year’s tornado worlds Robert actually snapped his Mast, but the diamond wires were absolutely fine. It was this piece that holds the diamond wires inside the mast that broke. So let us take a closer look.
The Critical Piece
If we remove the mast foot, this piece attaches to the Mast foot here and it’s this bolt that we use for the adjustment of the diamond wires with. And this piece is what broke! So every year, make sure to check this piece for any signs of wear or cracking as it could save you from having to buy a very expensive new Mast.
Bonus Tip
Here’s another important tip: This is really difficult to get back in. What I’m going to do is use a cable tie to pull it in and push it into the mast if it’s still a bit too tight. Then slide the cable tie up a little bit more until it’s not so tight anymore, and push that up. As I do this, the cable tie would just slip down meaning that it is possible to get everything back together properly.
To sum it all up, it is essential to inspect and maintain your boat’s diamond wires and the piece holding them securely in place, particularly if you are an avid sailor participating in competitive events like the tornado worlds. Regular maintenance and knowing how to troubleshoot issues can save you from hefty Mast replacement costs.
Now that you have this crucial sailing knowledge, make sure to apply these tips for your next sailing trip and remember to check both the diamond wires and their holding piece at least once a year. You may just prevent potential disaster while enjoying a day on the water with your friends or family. Remember to stay safe out there!
