How Much Main Sheet Tension Should You Have When Sheeting In Block To Block?

In this Joy Rider TV live Q&A session, we’re diving into the question of how much main sheet tension is needed when shearing in block to block on catamarans like Hobie 16 and F18 style boats. Host Joseph Bennett shares detailed explanations and tips for sailors looking to improve their sailing skills.

Determining Main Sheet Tension

To determine the right amount of main sheet tension, we can look at several factors including the mast rake, rig tension, sail cut, and the type of boat being sailed. In lighter winds, it’s essential not to over-sheet the main sail as this will slow down your boat speed. When sailing in double trapezing conditions or when the wind is strong enough, you may sheet in tighter.

Telltale Signs of Over-Sheeting

The telltale signs that your main sail is over-sheeted include telltales on the leech side not flying straight back. A good indicator to see if you have too much tension is from behind; if the leech of the main sail crosses the center line of the boat, it’s a sign of excessive sheeting. Remember that having a tight leech improves pointing ability and windward performance.

Leech Tales for Sails

To ensure accurate adjustment, installing leech telltales is a good option. By having four leech telltales on the main sail, the ideal position would be where the bottom one is just going around the back of the sail. However, do not worry if all of them disappear because this may indicate over-sheeting, causing loss in performance.

Setting Up Rig Tension

If you’re wondering how to adjust the rig tension to get easier access to sheeting block to block, there are a few factors involved. Firstly, adjusting mast rake can affect how easily you can pull the main sheet blocks together, making it easier if the mast is more upright or further back. Secondarily, the cut of your sail and its age may impact this ability. Proper setup on your boat rigging is essential in determining proper sail shape for maximum efficiency.

Using a Claw Hammer to Tighten Trampoline

To tighten the trampoline of your catamaran, you can use mechanical advantage methods. Using a claw hammer, one person pulls the rope while another stops it from slipping through with pliers or by pegging. Properly tightening the trampoline and securing any personal belongings or objects on the sail is crucial to avoid accidents.

Live Q&A With Joseph Bennett

In this live Q&A session, various viewers ask their questions and share their experiences. It covers different sailing techniques for both beginners and experienced sailors, including tips on single-handed sailing downwind, trampoline installation, and rigging adjustments.
