Can less sail actually make you faster?
It sounds completely backwards...
Most sailors assume that removing the jib from a Hobie 16 would make the boat slower. Less sail area should mean less speed... right?
So I decided to stop guessing and find out.
In this video I head out into strong wind conditions to compare sailing a Hobie 16 with the standard main and jib setup against main only, looking at:
• Is it even possible to sail without the jib?
• Does it feel more stable?
• Can you push the boat harder?
• Is it actually any faster?
• Would I choose this setup again?
Whether you sail a Hobie 16, Dart 18, Nacra, Prindle, Topcat, F18 or any other beach catamaran, you'll probably recognise the feeling of being overpowered in strong winds. This experiment might just change the way you think about sail setup.
