Building Confident Crew 16.1 The Fundamentals

In this chapter of the Joyrider Classroom series, we introduce the key concepts behind taking a new crew sailing and building confident sailors from day one.

Taking someone out for their first sail is a privilege — and a responsibility. Whether it’s a friend, family member, club member, or future race crew, the way you design that first experience will determine whether they fall in love with catamaran sailing or never want to step on the boat again.

In this lesson, we look at the core philosophy behind sailing with a new crew, including:

How to make every session enjoyable from arrival to de-rigging

Creating physical and psychological safety

Keeping new sailors informed and involved

Explaining risks without creating fear

Protecting the most delicate thing on the boat — their confidence

This chapter sets the foundation for the entire module, where we go on to cover light wind first sails, stronger wind sessions, trapezing progression, taking a novice onto the race course, and ultimately getting them confidently on the helm.

This is Module 16 of the Joyrider Classroom series, designed to give you deep, structured knowledge across all aspects of catamaran sailing.
