~ SUMMER CRUISING IN A TINY SAILBOAT (part 1) ~ Lost Autopilot and Electronic Charts!
This is part one of an epic 11-day sailing adventure cruising the Pacific coast, SF Bay Area and the Sacramento Delta aboard my West Wight Potter 19, with not a single night in a marina. Reflecting back, it had everything:
Battery dead
Lost my hat
Dragged anchor
Broke the auto-tiller
Clocked me gnoggin, again!
Anchor rode wrapped around the keel
Collision with unknown object, impailed on keel
Thankfully:
I'm still alive
No serious damage
I was able to work around and / fix things
Pittsburgh was amazing and surprising
Sailing on the Bay was great
I got a new hat
My skills are getting well exercised!
I'm hopefully learning a lot
All calamities were handleable, if that's a word.

Is that a real dog?
It's funny because I've had a bit of a sense of foreboding about this trip, but now that I'm underway, I feel excited. See you later, Santa Cruz. I hope. Jonah's rub rail is looking a little raggedy. I make sure to keep watch through the new Dodger windows. Yes, it looks like I'll be motoring all day, but on the plus side, the sun's poking through the fog now. Got to keep the spirits up amid the gray and gloom. Anchor and road at the ready. Anchors down and all is good. First glimpse of the gate.
We're off to a late start today and for good reason. Tides and currents play a big role in deciding when to depart in the San Francisco Bay. Today we're going to be riding the flooding tide up through the San Pablo Bay. Can someone please tell me why this thing is here. The aftermath of a full-on day sailing.
Wind on the beam and current on the bow results in the boat being perpendicular to the rode. Oh dear, batteries really suffering now. Costco Chateauneuf Du Pape? Moitessier had some interesting things to say about self steering. See you tomorrow.
