Healthy Aging Requires Community

I do not like retirement homes. That may sound provocative, especially as aging societies rapidly build more of them. But after traveling across Japan’s longevity hotspots and researching healthy lifespan, I increasingly wonder whether separating generations may actually accelerate decline rather than slow it. This article is not simply a criticism. It is also a reflection on how we might design aging communities differently, places where older people remain part of the wider rhythm of life rather than parked outside it.

Lowell Sheppard is a long-term resident of Japan, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, founder of Never Too Late Academy, and Special Advisor to the International Academic Forum (IAFOR). He is currently traveling across Japan researching longevity, healthy lifespan, and the role of community in aging well.
