The indigenous Mentawai people of Pokai on Siberut island aren’t shy, and are said to be the oldest tattooed community in the world. They waved and smiled their welcome – not dressed up in traditional costume for the package tours, but wearing 21st century t-shirts and shorts like the rest of us. They keep a discreet and respectful distance – apart from the kids, of course, and a few characters we met in the village!
