As the Borneo rainforest burns and we go back in time, it adds an eerie pall to Siantan. With SY Esper safely moored, we go on a bike tour around the island where people carry on the traditions of 1000 years. In some places, it’s like being back in time, with people using hand tools for farming, rock-breaking, and fishing.

How many wedding parties in your country would invite odd-looking foreigners wearing inappropriate clothes to come and join in the dancing? And what about kids playing outside in the street? Were times simpler in times gone by? Were there fewer dangers? Were we less scared than we seem to be now? Are children today missing out by staying inside their own homes? When we were growing up the only advice was ‘don’t talk to strangers’ and ‘stay on the pavement’.
