Sailing Zatara crew get a taste of Aussie humour!! literally.

We enjoy the delights of exquisite Lucky Bay, by surfing, snorkelling and hiking before heading to Esperance, then Bremer Bay to see the marine spectacle and then around Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste to Busselton. Keith and Renee from @SailingZatara join Russ is fishing for squid and Keith gets inked in dramatic style. Lucky Bay is even better than we remember from our caravaning days. The water is so perfectly blue and the sand so white – justifying it’s title as the whitest sand beach in Australia. We surf some small waves and then snorkel around the rocks searching for crays. Together with @TheCruisingKiwis we walk to the top of a granite hill and enjoy the spectacular views and interesting native plants. @SailingZatara joins us by drone as he films our walk and the magnificent views. The weather threatens to turn difficult so we sail to Esperance where we enjoy the pleasures of civilisation – yummy food and some delightful walks to the eastern coastline and the pink lake. The fuel depot has a leak so we get fuel from the fuel truck, together with @SailingZatara and then head out to Bremer Canyon in the hope of witnessing the recently discovered congregation of large marine animals in the upwelling of nitrogen. We leave Esperance around midday and get to Bremer Canyon the next morning and ensure we’re on the 1000 metre line. We’re lucky enough to see a large pod of pilot whales splashing around in front of our boat and let a local charter know where to find them. We’re thrilled that we’ve seen this rare sight and managed to get some photos and video, while keeping the boat on course and not getting too close to the whales. With great weather, we continue on to Cape Leeuwin in gentle downwind breeze which is unusual for this infamous cape. We round the cape in the middle of the night and head up the coast towards Cape Naturaliste and round it too in lovely easy conditions. We head to Busselton, eager to explore and experience this town that is one of WA biggest and most popular tourist locations. We initially go into the local marina, Port Geographe and then move out to anchor near the famous 2km long jetty and soak up the relaxed fun vibe. Keith, Renee from @SailingZatara and Russ head out to do some serious squid fishing. Russ catches a big squid and Keith comments that its the biggest squid that he’s ever seen. Keith comments that he doesn’t want to be inked by the squid while he scoops it up in the net. Russ takes over the net and untangles the precious catch from the lure. All of a sudden the squid squirts its second lot of ink all over the boat and ….onto Keith. Keith is shocked that this could happen especially after he’s specifically warned Russ that he doesn’t want to get inked. Renee from @SailingZatara is worried that her camera may have been inked and might be ruined. She also comments that she’s glad she took Margy’s advice not to wear her good clothes squid fishing. Keith and Russ clean the squid on the back of Zatara and Russ prepares his signature stuffed squid delicacy. He stuffs the squid tubes with lobster, mozzarella and garlic and ‘sows’ the tube closed with a tooth pick. He grills it in butter on the barbecue until the mozzarella runs out and crisps up on the grill and the squid tube is golden. People come from far and wide, well from @SailingZatara and @TheCruisingKiwis to enjoy the scrumptious meal and all comment that this trully does justice to two western australian delicacies.
