We left Mantaray Bay after Russ’s birthday celebrations with @SailingZatara @gonewiththewynns the crew from Renagade and Cat leya and headed just a few hours north to Blue Lagoon, made famous by the film of the same name, staring Brooke Shields. It was a lovely protected bay with white sandy beaches on all sides, clear blue water and coconut palms along the beach. And to top off its brilliance, it had lovely snorkeling too. We did loads of kayaking, swimming, snorkeling and walking. The local resort was running at half speed and invited all six yachts in for a night of pizza which was delicious and in great surroundings. They also grew and sold fresh veggies which was great as we had run out by that stage in our trip. Usually the Nanuya Lailai beach would have been crowded with resort and cruise ship guests but we yachties had it all to ourselves – what a privilege! We got to know George who was the caretaker for the southern part of the island (relaxing area for cruise ship guests) and he said we could snorkel and walk and swim on the beach. He told us about a great track through the interior of the island through rainforest to the other side of the island where Lo’s Tea House would make us a drink and a freshly baked doughnut. On the walk over, we noticed lots of random patches of casava and a few fruit trees. We did sevusevu at the village of Sese which is on the southern edge of Blue Lagoon. We met the nephew of the chief and he introduced us to his wife who was making a mat from pandanus leaves and showed us all the trophies his daughter had won for her schoolwork. She is currently studying to be a pastry chef on the mainland, following in her mother’s footsteps. Both parents were very proud of her. He also let us know that 2 of his brothers lived with him and his wife and it was his responsibility to look after them because they weren’t well.
