Hunting crays with my super WIFE, Sailing up the coast of Western Australia, WOW!!!

At Fremantle Sailing Club we have all our gear out on the walkway before heading out to Rottnest Island. First we fuel up on the dock at Fremantle and then head west about 15 nautical miles to Thomson Bay at Rottnest and eventually managed to tie up to the mooring that we’ve booked – just $80 per night!! We walk around Thomson Bay and do a free walking tour and find out loads of interesting history about the island and spot a few of the endemic quokkas hanging out around the tourists. Next day we join our friends Sharon and Jason from Slow Motion and cycle all the way around Rottnest Island, about 26km. It was mainly just gentle hills and flat road – fortunately the speed limit for cars is 10km/hour so it feels really safe. There are loads of interesting places to park your bike and read about and explore the local bays so it was a fantastic day. Unfortunately there are no cafes along the way so we were pretty hungry by the time we got back. But we made up for it with lunch at the very impressive beach hotel. We snorkelled for crays but no luck unfortunately. After Rottnest, we set out on our trip north and spent a night at Two Rocks. We anchored in the harbour which was super protected with brand new big rock walls everywhere. Next morning we set off to Lancelin and anchored on Lancelin Island. The snorkelling here was fabulous and we saw hundreds of fish. We did spot some lobsters but despite much effort, we weren’t able to catch them. We had sundowner drinks with Jason and Sharon from Slow Motion on the beach at Lancelin Island. Here we found an injured sea lion lying on the beach, with a female close by. He barely moved when we came to check him so we concluded that he needed help. We telephoned a number of organisations that care for injured wildlife and the last one said that if he is still there in a few days, they’ll come and see him. We were thrilled that next day he was gone so we’re hoping that he recovered and went off to fight another day.
