Dinghy rapid rides, Catching HUGE BARRAMUNDI and mudcrabing. Oh yes and more waterfalls!!

In this video we leavew Dugong Bay, just around the corner from Horizontal Falls. There are whirlpools and overfalls everywhere as the tide goes out with us. We head across the enormous bay to Raft Point where we anchor in 20m of water. Our afternoon dinghy ride takes us up a small creek and are amazed at the spectacular Kimberley sunset over the massive golden rock faces of Steep Island. We’re thankful for our big dinghy and large motor that allows us to get through the whirlpools and strong 6kt currents. There are quite a few large cruise ships going out to Montgomery Reef so we decide to have a fishing day. It was a great decision because Russ catches the sought after big Barramundi in the run off despite several hungry crocodiles trying to assert their rights to a feed. We share the barra meals with our friends in Alikat, No Regrets and Laylah and we all remark on how moist and delicious barra is. Next day we all get up super early to head out to Montgomery with the outgoing tide, getting there in time to see the water rush off the reef in massive turbulent torrents. Russ scares Margy by nosing the dinghy right up into the pummelling white water and by racing over the whirlpools. Its a trully magnificent site that can only really be seen at this one location on a falling tide. We head back to Raft Point with the incoming tide and head up Red Cone Creek and meet our new friends Tina and David from Nomad Davina. There’s lots of fishing and crabbing here and two trips to waterfalls – always a nice highlight to be able to swim in safe fresh water in this steamy hot climate of the Kimberley. The first is Red Cone Waterfall and we clamber up the rocks after securing the dinghy and meet a group of friends from a semi commercial boat and enjoy chatting and swimming in the clear deep water. The next waterfall is Sapphire Falls which is so different but welcome and resfreshing and beautiful, once we’re beyond the crocodile parts. More fishing and crabbing up the tributaries of Red Cone Creek, under the watchful shuttering eyes of local crocodiles, who are always watching incase we slip up. Next we head out to the ocean again to head up to Hunter River with Nomad Davina in the hope of good fishing and crabbing. We spend a few days here trying hard to catch something but no luck there. We sleep on the front of the boat because its so hot here and enjoy watching the movies on our laptop then the stars in the lovely clear Kimberley sky.
