Cruising Malaysia, exploring cultures, snorkelling and rainforest on tropical Islands

We had a look around Terengganu in the north east of mainland Malaysia, exploring its Chinese temples and mural walks, highlighting its close relationship with turtles and their desire to protect them. We visited a traditional wooden boat building business, right on the beach in the harbour. We were amazed at their skill in working with large heavy Malaysian hardwood to make the beautifully shaped hulls of the traditional wooden fishing boats. We go to Singapore to collect Phoebe and together explore food and the architectural and cultural marvels of Chinatown. A visit to the enormous and varied Gardens by the Bay was mindblowing. The Cloud Garden has about 10 stories of misty mountain vegetation and waterfalls spraying people with light mist. Year of the Dragon festivities are in full swing including magnificent floral displays and sound and light shows at night. Then we make our way through the Singapore straits to Sibu Island where we meet the resort owner and staff. We go to Pulau Tinggi to snorkel the marvels including strong currents and magificent marine life. We go to Tioman Island, walk through the rainforest to see the rare and magnificent Rafflessia flower, go to island to snorkel the massive granite rocks and the hugely diverse coral and marine life including the giant barracuda being followed by sharks and some turtles. Phoebe is fearless in duck diving and exploring, creating memories (and spoiling her, for future snorkelling which won’t be as good as Tioman). We explore the south of Tioman and walk to a waterfall and pools where we’re the only people. We stroll through the beachside village to understand more about Malaysian life including staying far enough away from monkeys to not have our food taken but close enough to observe them monkeying around from tree to tree.
