What’s missing in this initial trial is emphasis on sail trim. The Raymarine works well in quite heavy air and sea–far better than the general reputation of wheel pilots–if the boat is trimmed for neutral helm, as it must be for a pendulum wind vane system.
Experienced singlehanders reef the main and headsails until the boat just about steers itself. In heavy air this costs a very small amount in speed. For a wheel pilot to work, get rid of weather helm.
