The Ultimate Sailboat for the Rest of Us | Pearson 36 Pilothouse | $62,500 | Tour
Only about 30 of these were ever built. And after spending some time aboard this 1980 Pearson 36 Pilothouse, we’re wondering why!
Canadian Ken is back aboard with BoatFools Sailing, and he’s mighty glad he didn’t miss this one.
Designed by the legendary Bill Shaw, this 1980 Pearson 36 Pilothouse (hull #28) just might be the ideal cruising sailboat for a couple looking to explore the Intracoastal Waterway, tackle the Great Loop, or simply spend a summer wandering the coast of Maine.
With a shallow 4.5-foot draft, inside and outside steering stations, a light-filled pilothouse with nearly 360-degree visibility, and a surprisingly spacious interior, this is a boat designed for comfortable, practical cruising.

And there’s plenty more to like!
⚓ Some highlights:
– Rare Bill Shaw design — approximately 30 built
– 4.5-foot draft, ideal for exploring shallow cruising grounds
– Dual steering stations, including a fully equipped inside helm
– 45 HP Westerbeke diesel with approximately 1,450 hours indicated
– 120 gallons of freshwater capacity
– Separate shower stall
– Spacious galley with three-burner stove, oven, and refrigeration
– Comfortable forward stateroom and convertible dinette
– Reverse-cycle heat and air conditioning, plus a solid-fuel cabin heater
– Electric anchor windlass and autopilot
– Exceptional access to the engine and mechanical systems
Perhaps just as importantly, this particular Pearson has benefited from long-term ownership and professional care. Since 2003, she’s been maintained and stored by Journey’s End Marina in Rockland, Maine, spending her winters indoors in above-freezing conditions.
For a boat approaching half a century old, that’s a pretty compelling history.
But what really caught our attention was how thoughtfully this boat was designed. From the enormous engine access beneath the pilothouse sole to the comfortable seating, abundant storage, and protected inside helm, Bill Shaw clearly understood what cruising sailors actually need.
Could this be the perfect cruising sailboat for two?
Come aboard with Canadian Ken and me as we explore one of Pearson’s rarest and most interesting designs.
And tell us in the comments: Would you choose a pilothouse sailboat for your next cruising adventure?
