Getting the Boat Out | Reading Ralph Waldo Emerson

Welcome back to another Blue Moon Life video! This video is a bit different: we weren’t able to film a regular vlog this week, so instead we are sharing a reading of excerpts from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essays about nature, which first appeared in 1836. We wanted to share the text because we feel it captures some of the essence of how we feel and think about nature, and our relationship to nature and the ocean, especially during the spring.

The text discusses the concept of motion and change, as well as identity and rest, in nature. It emphasizes that nature is consistent in following its laws, even though it may seem to go against them at times. The text also highlights the interconnectedness and continuity of all natural elements, from the poles to the tropics, from rocks to living organisms. It touches on the idea that everything in nature is in a constant state of transition and progression towards consciousness. Additionally, the text suggests that nature holds clues and evidence of the existence and necessity of different elements, including humans, in its intricate web of relationships.

Sailing is a practice that involves understanding and working in harmony with the dynamic forces of nature, such as wind, water, and weather, to navigate a sailboat. The principles described in the text can be related to sailing in various ways. Sailors must understand the movement of wind, which drives the sails and propels the boat forward. They need to be adept at adjusting the sails to capture the most favorable winds and optimize the boat’s speed and direction. Sailors must consider the motion of the water, such as waves, tides, and currents, which can affect the boat’s performance and course. Being attuned to the ever-changing motion of wind and water is crucial in sailing to make adjustments and respond to the dynamic conditions on the water.
All the text read in this video are in the public domain, and it is used with the following permissions: “This ebook is for the use of anyone anywhere in the United States and most other parts of the world at no cost and with almost no restrictions whatsoever.
