Driving Through a BLIZZARD and Wild Camping // Winter Van Life

One of the risks of van life during the winter months in Canada is that sometimes you get caught in a blizzard or snowstorm! We hit o first snow of the year in central Ontario during our drive home west.

We were a little nervous driving through the snow at first because it was the first time handling the van in those conditions, but the vehicle did great! We have a good set of mud/snow tires on the rig and it is heavy enough in the rear to prevent too much sliding around.

It took us a while to find a suitable place to park the van for camping overnight. We picked one spot but changed our minds because it would have meant sleeping in the middle of an old road.

In the end we found a quiet spot off the beaten track that was easy to get in and out of. We got up super early in the morning to avoid causing any problems with the local authorities and caught a sun rise over beautiful Lake Superior at the Terry Fox monument.

Our van is a 1998 Mitsubishi Delica, originally built in Japan. It is the L400 model with a V6 Gasoline engine, 4×4, locking rear differentials for better off-road performance and plenty of room in the back for our conversion! We also have a large metal roof rack and ladder that will allow us to carry more cargo.
