Imagine waking up on an isolated desert island after your ship has been wrecked by treacherous waves. The sun rises behind the distant mountains as you survey the desolate shoreline.

Day One Survival Challenge

Your first task is to secure your vital resources. You have a knife – perhaps one of the first items you grabbed when you were thrown overboard. The other key tool at your disposal today is a stingray barb, carefully collected from an unfortunate encounter in the previous survival challenge episode.

Mapping Out Survival Strategies

You need to prioritize food, hydration, and fire as your main goals. Water can be found in drinking coconuts on the top of the tall coconut palms. Food will come from hunting small fish using your spear and collecting oysters scattered along the shore.

Starting a Fire

To start a fire, you’ll need to find dry material on the island. Using natural resources like twigs and kindling gathered near a dense concentration of flowers, which usually indicate a good source of fuel.

Stalking Your First Fish

You carefully head to the windward side where flotsam from other wrecks may have washed ashore. It’s here that you spot fish near shallow rocks – perfect for your first attempt at hunting with your spear.

Building a Shelter

Near the end of day one, you find a place to sleep – using large leaves as cover from the elements and unwanted attention from predators.

Shipwreck History

The bay you are stranded on is notorious for shipwrecks dating back to the 1800s. Hundreds of ships have met their end on these jagged reefs after being pushed onto them by prevailing winds. The tragic history here includes stories of heroic survival, sad losses and cannibalism among those marooned.

Routine of Survival

Over the next two months, our adventurer continues to gather coconuts for hydration and hunts daily to catch fish. By working with nature and studying the tactics used by aboriginal people before him, he masters the art of spear hunting.

The Ultimate Tool: A Spear Thrower

Improvising from a green tree branch, he crafts a spear thrower which greatly improves his hunting technique. The increased force and accuracy of the spear makes it much easier to catch larger fish like trevally and garfish.

Signaling for Rescue

Determined not to be stuck on the island forever, he decides to signal a passing boat. Following in the footsteps of other shipwrecked sailors from 1813, our adventurer sets up a white flag as his rescue beacon. In time, it works – a Genesis inflatable boat spots his flag and comes to pick him up.
