Wrapping Up the Mizzen Mast – Episode 165 – Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

The mizzen mast has been tandem project as the planking has progressed. Alix chipped away at it between other important tasks, and now it’s finally finished! Of course, the hounds and hardware need to be installed, but this big, beautiful, repurposed piece of Victoria’s past and Arabella’s future is shaped and painted. It will get stashed out of the way in the boathouse for when the time comes to work on the rigging.

Right as we were wrapping this important project, we had a fan come out to volunteer his time and talent. Greg was not only a huge help with some shop work, but as a filmmaker, picked up the camera a bit, offering us a different perspective of the project. We had a chat about the philosophies and ideas about this project.

We hope you enjoy this episode. Thank you for watching, subscribing and supporting! See you next Friday!

*News* Ben’s found something that will finally make it possible for us to have closed captioning again for those who need it. Accessibility is important to us, and we appreciate everyone’s patience with this. We should be able to roll this out soon.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38′ wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
