A wooden boat, seven years in the making, starting with milling trees for the lumber, went across the state via the highway to the coast where she really belongs. Before going, we needed to organize and protect the big floor tools in the shop, such as the big band saw and thickness planer. Arabella had to be shifted toward the driveway about 20 degrees or so in order for the truck to have the room it needed… how do you move very heavy things? Carefully and with smarts.
We arrived in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, and only a couple days later put the masts in this sailboat for the very first time. That means we immediately began working very hard here at Buzzards Bay Yacht Services. We do a bit of step welding. Steve goes aloft on the mast like the climber he is.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
