We discover that Salty Lass is a floating bomb as we have a leak in our butane gas system. Very luckily for us, the leak is in the best possible place.
So, once we stop tossing our butane overboard, we look at ways to use less of it using Mr D's thermal cooker - and Prudence interferes as usua...
So many points were raised after our last video that we have done an out-of-sequence realtime one to address the points raised.
And our heating system fails... in January!

With the colder weather drawing in, we add more insulation to Salty Lass and overhaul the heating system.

The foot of our sail cover falls to pieces and, since they have to be custom made, we decide we can do it ourselves with only a domestic sewing machine, a sailor's palm and ultra-violent thread.
And yes... that IS ultra-violent :-) :-)
We build a much needed bookcase to hold all our Pilot Guides and Cruising Guides as well as DVDs and reading books.

We attend the annual 24 hour race on Southport lake. For a change we are doing the cooking rather than running a boat (as in the previous two years).
It started very mild and ended up very gusty with Beverely capsizing on her last lap and winding up in the lake, too cold to continue.

We're back in Liverpool and we have boat projects to get on with.
After our Irish Sea adventure, we now have a long list of projects that we need to complete to convert Salty Lass from a comfortable weekender to a comfortable cruiser. We also take part in local sailing events as well as specta...
We reflect on the lessons learned from our passage around Chicken Rock and the bottom of the Isle of Man, but sadly our cruise around the Irish Sea was coming to an end.
We also discuss how to "build your own riser" if you have to moor up to a harbour wall that lacks risers.

We leave Peel, Isle of man, for a short passage to Port St Mary and we go on a lovely calm day. Unfortunately the weather soon turns and we make the mistake of pressing on when we should probably have turned back to Peel.
Big thanks to Isle of Man Diving Charters who came to see we were OK and assi...
We get weather-bound for a few days in the Isle of Man, so Gaynor goes off in search of the local seafood whilst Beverley keeps an eye on the weather. Eventually, we learn the hazards of tying up to fishing boats (obvious in retrospect, but there you are......)

While in the Isle of Man, we took the opportunity to go out with Sailing for the Disabled. It was a fantastic experience and gave kids from the Isle of Man time at sea gave us the opportunity to be involved in a great project as well as helming a 48ft Beneteau. It was humbling to be trusted with the...
We sail from Bangor to Peel via Donaghadee Sound and dodging plenty of lobster pots, but rollers from recent storms persisted and, combined with light winds, exposed a weakness in our sail plan.
Once in Peel, Beverley demonstrated just how many layers of clothing are needed in UK waters... Peeling ...
Boat projects take up a lot of our time in Bangor, but we find time to uncover an astounding fact about this quiet little town on the edge of Belfast Lough

Bangor, Belfast and the Titanic - We leave Ardglass to go north to Bangor via the Copelands and Donaghadee Sound (which we transited in darkness so no video alas) and into Bangor Marina.
We decided to take the train into Belfast and do a tour of the place, starting with the Titanic.

This SYSL Extra shows Gaynor doing a splice on 3 braid nylon rope for our kedge anchor. The key is getting the first three loops through the standing part and then simply repeating the procedure until the required number of splices are done.
If you do not have a Hollow Fid then acquire one. They ar...
We sail from Carlingford to Ardglass which means we have to cross Greenore Point - an area notorious for tidal streams, breakers and rough seas. Since the boat next to us in the marina got badly damaged transiting the Point, we are a bit nervous before setting off...

We tested our Fujifilm XP130 "Tough camera" by dunking it into the marina water. It seems to have survived.
We saw a number of common jellyfish and small fry

Carlingford Lough was our destination, but we had to wait for a weather window so we did a few tasks aboard before setting off. It was a cold run so we rewarded ourselves with an excellent curry in the Sitar Curry house.
A marina with a first rate curry house and a 100 year old boat made from cemen...
The "Rule of Twelfths" is a rule-of-thumb that we use frequently to decide if a location is safe to anchor or if a passage is safe to do. It only takes a few minutes and does not need tidal curves or templates. All you need is the tidal range and High Water height.
We use the Rule to deci...
Having a rope caught in our propeller means that all our plans had to be rethought. In the end, Howth Yacht Club's diver did the job quickly and efficiently and he was a fabulous guy to talk to - coffee and biscuits took a lot longer than removing the rope.
So instead, we took a trip to Dublin...
An eventful stay at Howth and Ireland's Eye with Bev being sent up the mast to sort out some hoists and then Salty Lass gets into a bit of difficulty.

We hop from Port Dinorwic to Caernarfon and then across the infamous Caernarfon Bar to Ireland which was hiding in the most spectacular sunset.
Top tip: Always get LOCAL KNOWLEDGE and never, ever cross Caernarfon Bar without talking to the Caernarfon Harbour master
We have to navigate the notorious Swellies in the Menai Strait which is noted for the difficulty in navigating it. It has shoals, rocks, surges and (occasionally) whirlpools and planning your passage through it requires careful study of all the pilotage marks that have been installed over the years....
We move from Conwy and run into an un-forecast storm so we divert to Beaumaris where we spent two days on a mooring ball waiting for it all to blow over.
