This week we attempt to negotiate the treacherous Tomia entrance, which is a very skinny, shallow channel to get to the idyllic anchorage on the other side.
Pulau (meaning island) Tomia is one of four islands that make up the regency of Wakatobi. The people that inhabit the eighteen villages of Tomia are just as we’ve experienced in Indonesia, warm and welcoming. But… before we can get off our boat to explore this little island, we must get through the treacherous channel at the entrance.
The other Tailenders’ boats made it through safely, but the current had increased, the tide dropped, and most of them had help from a dingy pushing them against the current to stop them from hitting the many surrounding bommies. We had invaluable advice from Beyond Outrageous Tony who had bounced off many of the rocks. He kindly came aboard Ocean Lady to provide us with support.. It was one of the things that make sailing slightly stressful at times.
With both motors on full throttle and many eyes watching for rocks we got through without incident! What a relief. Thanks to ChisPis and George who helped us along the way.
Once we had anchored safely in 4m of water, we escaped off Ocean Lady to explore and say hi to the town folk. They were eager to give us high fives and take lots of selfie selfies. We inadvertently walked straight through a traditional Indonesian wedding taking place, so we stopped to take in this special moment. We were invited to stay to feast with them but didn’t want to impose so we kept on walking.
Cozzy was super excited to be celebrating her birthday at Tomia. We’d researched local restaurants and found a perfect place on a hill overlooking the stunning bay and sunset. We chatted to the owner, Amanda, via Google Translate as she didn’t speak English and she was happy to accommodate all 20 of us (The Tailenders had collected some extra boats along the way to party with). Wow, how spoilt was Cozzy with the delicious food and special birthday cakes to celebrate. And Amanda offered to take us on a motorbike tour of Tomia the next day which was also a highlight.
Thanks so much for coming aboard on our Indonesia adventures, thank you, we appreciate you sticking around. It’s always more fun having you here!
